What is Spiritual Direction: Exploring Your Story Around Religion & The Divine

Spiritual direction is an ancient Christian tradition designed to help spiritual seekers encounter God in everyday life. The spiritual director engages with the seeker in a form of “holy listening” to discern God’s movement in the participant’s life.

“The best candidates are those who have lived life and have not been afraid of its joys and pains…they have strong desires for something more in their relationship with God”

Fr. William Barry, SJ, a noted spiritual teacher.

When might spiritual direction be helpful?

Spiritual direction is appropriate at any time on the spiritual journey, especially when we:

  • Have an unsolved longing for something more in life
  • Struggle with making an important decision
  • Experience a major life transition
  • Feel stuck or uninspired in our prayer life

How is spiritual direction different from psychotherapy?

Both spiritual direction and psychotherapy must happen in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. In spiritual direction, the goal is not to fix or solve the participant’s problem. Instead, its purpose is to develop the seeker’s personal relationship with God by making them aware of where God is acting in their life.

The spiritual director, in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, serves as a conduit between the seeker and God.

YOU, may be at one of those places in your life.
